US government threatens TikTok owners to sell app or face ban

The state has directed owners of Chinese video-sharing app TikTok Chinese to sell their shares or face a potential ban on the app in the US.

The administration of US President Joe Biden is known to have taken drastic measures to potentially block the TikTok app in North American countries, fearing that user data would be shared with the Chinese government.

Biden has expressed many concerns about how TikTok could compromise US data, but this is the first time the administration has threatened a ban, Sky News reported Thursday.

In 2020, Donald Trump was stopped by US courts when he attempted to prohibit TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance.

TikTok, which has more than 100 million US users, has already been muffled by the White House after it ordered government agencies to delete the app on federal devices and systems.
