The Tinubu govt is promising to improve electricity as part of the proposed tariff hike

The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that they will improve electricity across the country as part of the plan to levy electricity tax on the first night of July.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Temitope Fashedemi, announced this on Thursday. According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Mrs. Chinwe Udouwem, Fashedemi said this when the special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on energy, Mrs. Olu Verheijen visited the ministry.

“We hope that you will identify some of the problems that are facing the sector as technical directors and company leaders under the information that informs you of the work in progress or continues,” Fashedemi said. In his speech, Verheijen said that the electricity sector is important for the growth and production of different countries.

He said that changes in the electricity sector during the year will have a positive effect which is much desired. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the players in the electricity sector and a comprehensive approach to achieve sustainable solutions.

“We need to create an enabling environment that allows the self-employed to grow and get affordable electricity bills for families, seniors who use electricity,” he said. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the country’s energy supply reached 5,852 gigawatt hours in the first quarter of 2023.
